Time for Indian Railways to Shine!

Indian Railways plans to launch Vande Metro trains later this year. This is part of its initiative to connect major cities to towns within a 100 km radius. This will improve regional connectivity. Current regional trains are slow and unreliable for commuters. Vande Metro trains are set to end that ordeal.

These are set to be developed on the lines of the European Regional Train System. As someone who has used the system extensively, I can assure you that it exceeded my expectations and if implemented in India, we may see super huge economic zones like the Shenzhen Bay Area.

To provide context, the distance between Paris and Lyon (Largest and Second-largest city in France) is approximately 500 km. This is almost equal to the distance between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. France has an extensive network of high-speed and regional trains. Because the High-Speed Rail covers the distance in less than two hours, there is hardly any air traffic between the two cities.

Key Success Factors for the European Rail System:

1. Reliability: You would observe that the trains start on time, arrive on time at each station. If you are travelling for work, rest assured that your morning train will arrive right on time for your morning meeting.
2. Seat Availability: Due to the high frequency of trains (every 30 minutes), some trains usually do not require reservations for travel, and you will definitely find a seat.
3. Connectivity: Almost all city centers are centered around the main railway station. And the railway station defines some places. Compare that to Goa in India, where the rail network is absent. Madgaon Railway station is at least 40–50 kms away from the state’s main tourist attractions. Bangalore Railway station is at least 15–20 kms away from 60% of the population of the city.
4. Frequency: The services run frequently. Supply exceeds demand thereby ensuring comfort and seat availability (Can be constrained during peak travel seasons).

Vande Metro trains will be a gamechanger if implemented on lines of the European Regional Train System. Waiting eagerly for the success of this new initiative!
